There is DIY, like the kind you see on the network devoted to DIY. Then there is my DIY, more the Sandra Lee of home decor, semi-homemade. There are lots of tutorials on how to make your own roman shades, but I've got two kids and the space of one two hour nap time to make four blinds. I need less cutting and more hot gluing!
One year ago we moved into the rental we are in today. With no window framing or architecture, the windows needed dressing up. Quickly I threw up a curtain panel and almost a year later, I couldn't wait to throw it out. I guess it worked for a time, but I need something more tailored and streamlined but still with a kick to it. So here is my semi-diy roman shade.
1. White fabric roman shades. Mine are from Lowes for about $26 for a standard window size of 35".
2. Bias tape, or ribbon, in a contrasting color you love. I bought these from Joann for about $1.99 a pack. For four windows with a 72" drop, you need about 16 yards.
3. Hot glue gun which I already had.
Total cost - $118 for four windows!
Before - lackluster panel.
Allen + Roth Fabric Shades in Snow from Lowe's
Bias Tape from Joann Fabric
Lay shade out flat and completely extended. Hot glue ribbon tape or ribbon
along the sides of the shade. Easy peasy!
Make sure you follow the tape or ribbon up under each fold or your shade will
not fold correctly when pulled.
After, way more tailored with just the right kick of bright color. Excuse the bed head :)
